Cyclamen Flowers at Afaia's Temple

Date: Dec 20, 2020

Media: Oil on linen canvas

Dimensions: 100 x 112 x 3cm

Note: This winter, I've been noticing these flowers growing all over our property and around the island. I had never seen these before but I admire their unique design and how the nose of the flower faces downwards.

This painting is based on a photo I saw by Mourtzis Traditional Sweets, a favorite shop of mine here in Aegina. They sell a lot of organic and quality food products but most notable are their sweets made with pistachios grown here on the island.

The cyclamen flower represents maternal love for our ancestors. It feels almost like a divine intervention to see them growing in front of the ancient temple of Afaia.
