Monastery and Aqueduct of Simopetra, on Mount Athos
Date: Mar 30, 2020
Media: Oil on linen canvas
Dimensions: 70 x 50 x 3cm
Note: About 7 years ago, I had the privilege of visiting the Holy Mountain, in Greece. It was a unique opportunity to go there as one of my first trips. Special thanks to my friend Christos for the opportunity as it's not easy to get in.
This painting is based off an old sketch I found online from 1916, I think. The composition was interesting and I wanted to see how it could could be brought to life with color, oil paint, and memories from being there.
There was one night when Christos and I were traveling from one monastery to the other all day and it was starting to get late. It was kind of scary being in the middle of nowhere on a rough mountain trail with the only light source being the moon. I remember, in the distance, the moment we finally found the monastery we were looking to stay at for the night. We came to the door, they greeted us and fed us a wonderful meal. They are great people.
I believe the sketch reference is: CURZON, Robert, Visits to Monasteries ini the Levant, London, Humphrey Milford,[1865/1916]
