“A Night in Symi”

Date: October 2024

Media: Oil paint on canvas

Dimensions: 100W x 70H x 3.5D cm

Description: This painting took me ages to finish. It’s inspired by a small Greek island called Symi. While painting, I continuously discovered improvements to make. It kept going, and going, and going. I still don’t think it’s done, but I’ve got to move on

Arriving in the port of Γιαλός in Symi. You see so many traditional houses, colorfully painted. Bright ochres, indigos, and terracotta, with red-tiled roofs and little balconies. It’s truly a fairytale island

Throughout the canvas, we have the energy of the nightlife. People are out dining walking here and there, having conversations under a full moon. There are so many bright reflections on the calm sea. Warm tones of yellow, pink, orange and gold. A sharp contrast with the cool dark backdrop of the slopes of Γιαλός. Almost every color of the spectrum has been used. I incorporated loose brushstrokes and countless layers of thick paint. This allows light to enter the paint film and illuminate the image
