Cliffside Monastery in Amorgos Greece - Hozoviotissa

Date: Aug 11, 2021

Media: Oil on linen canvas

Dimensions: 45 x 60 x 2cm

As an ode to the Grace of Panagia, known as the Virgin Mary, Hozoviotissa Monastery was built by Alexius Comnenus in the 11th-century. The monastery symbolizes a tribute to the Holy Mother. With a blend of nature and man’s creation, the monastery is built right into the cliff and provides panoramic views of the endless blue sea.
We stayed on Amorgos island for a week. One morning at 5 am, we woke up and went to paint at the monastery. It was difficult to hike up there, carrying so many things in the dark, windy conditions on rocky cliffs. There was a moment as the sun was rising behind us when the light hit the main window and reflected outward.
