Minoan Amphora in Knossos Temple Crete

Date: March 2024

Media: Oil paint on canvas

Description: 40 x 50 x 2 cm

Description: I wanted to make this painting as an expression of admiration for the ancient Minoan civilization and their artwork. My goal was to focus on an artifact inspired by them so that the viewer could easily pay attention to its details. Secondarily, elements of Minoan architecture and symbolism are used to set the scene. The columns reference the great palace of Knossos found in Crete. The snake represents their Snake Goddess which has been interpreted by many as the protector of the house. The purpose was to paint the feeling of mystery and wonder of this great bronze age civilization and its colorful artwork.
